From Death by PowerPoint to Dynamic Learning: The Power of Communication Games

24 April 2025

Early in my facilitation career, I made what I now recognise as a classic mistake. Armed with meticulously prepared slides and expert knowledge, I would stand before groups delivering what I thought were compelling presentations about effective communication. Oh, the irony - lecturing about communication while my participants fought to keep their eyes open.

The turning point came during a particularly painful session where I noticed participants checking their phones, stifling yawns, and mentally checking out. That moment led me to discover the transformative power of communication games and simulations, fundamentally changing how I approach learning facilitation.

Research from the National Training Laboratories supports this shift, revealing that lecture-style learning typically results in a mere 5% retention rate, while participative learning and immediate practice of skills can boost retention to 75%. Even more compelling, studies by the University of Colorado found that simulation-based learning can increase engagement by up to 90% compared to traditional teaching methods.

The science behind this is fascinating. When participants engage in communication games, their brains release dopamine - the 'reward' neurotransmitter - making the learning experience both enjoyable and memorable. Furthermore, the emotional engagement created through game-based learning activates multiple neural pathways, significantly enhancing information retention and recall.

Let me share a practical example from a recent workshop I facilitated for a manufacturing company in Swindon. Instead of presenting theories about communication barriers, we used MLR's communication games to create experiential learning opportunities. The transformation was immediate. Participants who might have dozed through a lecture became energised problem-solvers, actively discovering communication principles through hands-on experience.

The beauty of communication games lies in their versatility. They can be strategically placed throughout a day-long workshop to:

  • Break the ice and establish psychological safety
  • Demonstrate communication principles in action
  • Provide practical application opportunities
  • Energise participants after lunch
  • Cement learning through experiential activities

What makes these games particularly powerful is their ability to create 'aha' moments organically. When participants experience communication challenges firsthand in a safe, gamified environment, the insights they gain are far more profound and lasting than any amount of theoretical input could provide.

Working with organisations like Husqvarna, Vodafone and Sapphire Balconies has shown me that regardless of the professional level or industry, well-designed communication games create engagement and insight that traditional training methods simply cannot match. The key is selecting the right games for your audience and expertly facilitating the debrief discussions where the real learning often occurs.

The most effective workshops now follow what I call the '20-40-40' rule:

  • 20% brief introduction and context
  • 40% experiential learning through games and simulations
  • 40% facilitated discussion and application planning

This approach not only makes learning more enjoyable but also significantly improves retention and application back in the workplace. Participants leave energised, with practical insights they've discovered themselves rather than being told.
